Speaking at a press junket for Button, Fincher revealed: “It looks like it’s not going to happen. There’s no script… we’ve been trying to do it but it’s probably not going to happen.”

Clarke’s novel tells the story of a gargantuan spaceship that arrives in our solar system and of man’s journey to investigate it. “It’s a very difficult book to translate cinematically,” Fincher says. He had been working with Morgan Freeman, who is looking to produce and star in the film, but it appears now that the project may not come to fruition, at least not any time soon.
