holmesThe first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes has gone live and it’s got more than a hint of the supernatural about it. With floating ladies and resurrections, Ritchie’s Holmes seems to deal more explicitly with the realm of fantasy than Doyle’s detective ever did (the mere semblance of the supernatural was as close as Holmes ever got in the novels). Consequently the film warrants more than a glance from genre fans.

Released this December, the new movie, which stars Robert Downey Jr as the titular detective and Jude Law as his faithful assistant Watson, isn’t precisely what fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation might have had in mind when news of the production was first made public. Based on this first look, this new, all-action, comical Sherlock Holmes looks to have more in common with the likes of 2003’s The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen than it does Doyle’s text, and that’s certainly not a good thing. Check it out for yourself in the trailer below.
