The Howling to get remade

Another old-school horror franchise gets tugged from the vaults.

the-howling-movie-poster1Horror franchise The Howling is the latest property to get the remake treatment, according to Variety. As reported by the publication – and cannily announced in time with the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, another werewolf feature – The Howling: Reborn is being produced by indie studio Moonstone Entertainment. Joel Kastelberg and Moonstone’s Etchie Stroh will be producing this franchise re-launch, and former MGM, New Line and Sony rep Joe Nimziki will be directing from his own script. The film has been given a February 2010 shooting date and should hit screens over the Halloween period of the same year.

The original Howling movie was directed by Joe Dante and starred actors Dee Wallace-Stone, Patrick Macnee and Robert Picardo. Based loosely on author Gary Brandner’s novel series, Dante’s film centred on a news anchor being stalked by a serial killer cum werewolf. This movie was successful enough to spawn six sequels, but will Nimziki’s upcoming effort have the same, er, bite as its predecessors? Howl your thoughts on the comments thread below.
