Marvel’s New Warriors TV series greenlit, Squirrel Girl incoming

Freeform commits to bringing New Warriors and Squirrel Girl to TV

It was reported last year that Marvel and ABC were working on developing a TV show based on New Warriors, and today the news has come down that Freeform has committed to a full first season.

THR reports that Cougar Town veteran Kevin Biegel is close to a deal to write and showrun the first season of the show, which has been given a straight-to-series order by the network. It will be Marvel’s first live-action comedy scripted comedy series, and will be made up of 10 half-hour episodes.

While the New Warriors‘ line-up hasn’t been confirmed, the report is very clear on the fact that fan-favourite Squirrel Girl will play a major part. “The series will feature Marvel fan-favorite “Squirrel Girl” (aka Doreen Green) as a totally empowering fan girl who is described as tough, optimistic and a natural leader. Doreen is confident and has the powers of a squirrel: she’s acrobatic, can fight and talk to other squirrels. Her most important trait is said to be her faith in people and ability to teach them to believe in themselves.”

As for the rest of the gang, possible Warriors include Firestar, Marvel Boy, Nova, Speedball, Namorita, Scarlet Spider and Justice, as they go on “the journey into adulthood, except in this world, they’re not quite super and not yet heroes and the guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.”

Freeform is also the home of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, which is similarly aiming for a 2018 air date. Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb said “Marvel’s New Warriors have always been fan favorites and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well. After the amazing experience we’ve had with Freeform on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes.”

Well, now all we have to do is wait for them to cast Stranger Things‘ Shannon Purser, right?

Marvel’s New Warriors will air on Freeform in 2018. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
