The Conjuring spin-off The Nun casts Demián Bichir

Corin Hardy’s The Nun casts The Hateful Eight and Alien: Covenant star to fight evil

Hot on the hells of the full trailer for David F Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation, news has come that Corin Hardy’s The Nun has cast its first star.

THR reports that Demián Bichir will star in the spin-off from The Conjuring 2 as Father Burke, “who is dispatched by Rome to investigate the mysterious death of a nun.” That’s not going to go well for him, is it?

It’s always great to see Bichir and he’s on an excellent run at the moment, having stolen the show as “Bob” in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and playing a major role in Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant next month. Other highlights on his eclectic CV include Che, Weeds, The Bridge, Machete Kills, The Heat and Lowriders. He’s an incredibly versatile actor who is always very watchable, so we’re thrilled that he’ll be leading this horror.

The Nun will be directed by The Hallow‘s Corin Hardy, and it’s written by Gary Dauberman (Annabelle) and James Wan, who is also on producing duties. Wan, of course, is currently in Australia preparing to shoot Aquaman with Jason Momoa, who is set to play the title role in Hardy’s The Crow reboot (hopefully). The Nun is set to begin filming in Romania this summer.

THR also reminds us that the demonic nun wasn’t originally in The Conjuring 2 and was a late addition during reshoots. It’s interesting that such a memorable element of the film, and a pretty damn important one, came about so late, but it’s an addition that obviously paid off handsomely for Wan and the studio. The Conjuring franchise has been hugely profitable for Warner Bros, so it’s not a surprise that they leapt on the chance for a second spin-off to follow Annabelle.

The Nun will be released on 13 July 2018. Keep up with the latest horror news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
