The short story collection begins with the history of who exactly created the great school of magic on the island of Roke, and in the final story, set a few years after the events of Tehanu, we glimpse the potential future of all magic in the shape of a fierce young woman called Dragonfly.

The new edition also includes ‘A Description of Earthsea’, a series of notes on the people, languages, literature and history of the region written by Le Guin, plus a foreword written by Le Guin which delves into the world she created in A Wizard of Earthsea, the first of the Earthsea novels published back in 1968.

Bound and blocked by a passionate new cover from London-based illustrator David Lupton, the five stories within are a deep dive into the history, geography, culture and languages of the magical world of Earthsea.

Working alongside Le Guin and her family, Lupton has also created six original colour plates inside the edition that perfectly complement each tale. The addition of a map of Earthsea on the inside covers adds a particularly nice Tolkein-esque touch.
