The Strangers 2 is finally happening

Johannes Roberts will direct The Strangers 2

We’d given up on The Strangers 2. After years in development, it looked like a sequel to Bryan Bertino’s chilling home invasion movie just wasn’t going to happen, for various reasons (oh, Relativity’s bankruptcy…).

But that’s all changed! Not only is it back on, it’s found a director, it’s got a shooting start date (this summer!), and it’s heading to Berlin to find financing.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Johannes Roberts will be stepping behind the camera for the follow-up. Roberts is the director of 2016’s ghost story The Other Side Of The Door, Noel Clarke alien movie Storage 24, and after-school slasher F.

Bertino wrote the screenplay with genre veteran Ben Ketai (Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word, The Forest, 30 Days Of Night: Dark Days).

The Strangers 2 “follows a family whose road trip takes a turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park and after the power goes out they decide to hunker down for the night in a borrowed trailer. Under the cover of darkness three familiar masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test their every limit.”

There’s a little quote from Roberts, too, as follows: “Working with The Fyzz and Bloom to bring the brilliant set-up from the first movie to a new generation and deliver a powerful sequel is incredibly exciting.”

We’re very excited that we’re finally getting a follow-up to The Strangers. Bertino’s original film was so striking back in 2008, one of the first and best of that wave of home invasion horrors, and while we’ve had to wait for this, we’re hoping it’s worth it.

In case you missed the original (and you should catch it if that’s the case), The Strangers starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman.

“After returning from a wedding reception, a couple staying in an isolated vacation house receive a knock on the door in the mid-hours of the night. What ensues is a violent invasion by three strangers, their faces hidden behind masks. The couple find themselves in a violent struggle, in which they go beyond what either of them thought capable in order to survive.”
