Everyone, take a breath and calm the heck down for this bombshell Netflix just dropped: they’re officially working on a prequel series to The Dark Crystal with The Jim Henson Company. WE KNOW.
The streaming service announced the news in this awesome teaser:
As you now know, the series will be called The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance, which in our opinion is just about one of the coolest titles ever.
Here’s a quick synopsis:
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.
It’s a big task but we’re sure Netflix can pull it off: the technology has changed since the original film was released in 1982, but the new series is keeping the puppets (made by the talented people at The Jim Henson Company) over would could have ended up being shoddy CG work. And there’s the fact that it’s Netflix. They don’t mind splashing the cash a little.
The original The Dark Crystal‘s conceptual designer Brian Froud is involved with the new series, so it’s sure to embody that old magic. Co-executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and Javier Grillo-Marxuach make up the lead writing staff, while Louis Leterrier is on executive producing and directing duties. Jim Henson’s daughter/CEO of the Jim Henson Company Lisa Henson is also executive producing.
In a statement, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix Cindy Holland said: “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will combine the art of puppetry perfected by The Jim Henson Company, with Louis’ vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects. I can’t wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life.”
