The Batman finds a director as Matt Reeves signs up

The War For The Planet Of The Apes director is taking on The Batman

For The Batman, it has been the best of times and the worst of times. We were pretty psyched to experience director Ben Affleck’s take on a Caped Crusader solo film, especially seeing as his version of the character is old and grumpy. Understandably, many people (us included) were gutted to see the back of Affleck when he recently decided that he actually didn’t want direct the film at all, bro.

The good news is that Warner Bros has taken virtually no time in finding a replacement to get the film’s pre-production rolling: Matt Reeves. Last week, it looked like Reeves would have something to do with The Batman when news broke that the War For The Planet Of The Apes director was in negotiations to take over the reins. But this week, it’s official.

Reeves seems like a good choice for the job, especially since he’s a lifelong fan of the masked hero.

In a statement, he said: “I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honoured and excited to be working with Warner Bros to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

Now that we can stop worrying about who will direct The Batman, we can start worrying about who will play the Batman. Affleck is currently still wearing the suit, but his lack of interest in helming the film is a bit alarming. What if he decides he actually wants nothing to do with it at all and bails on the entire thing?

If that very unlikely scenario does actually end up cropping up, we’d like to suggest Karl Urban as a suitable replacement. You all know he’d be brilliant.
