Penny Dreadful spin-off City Of Angels to star Natalie Dormer

Penny Dreadful spin-off City Of Angels casts Natalie Dormer in a lead role

Finally, some news regarding Penny Dreadful‘s upcoming spin-off series City Of Angels! According to THR, Natalie Dormer has officially been tapped to lead the series from Showtime.

The actress will star as Magda, “a supernatural demon who can take the appearance of anyone she chooses and who manifests in a number of guises throughout the story. The character is a dangerous enemy and invaluable ally.”

Dormer is playing Margaery Tyrell in Game Of Thrones, Anne Boleyn in The Tudors, Irene Adler/Moriarty in Elementary and Cressida in The Hunger Games films. She joins a cast that also includes Jessica Garza (The Purge) and Johnathan Nieves (New Amsterdam).

City Of Angels is set in 1930s Los Angeles, “a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.” The series will be rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the devil, and will explore a mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a historical backdrop. The show is worlds away from its Victorian London-set counterpart, and new characters and storylines will feature.

Penny Dreadful creator John Logan will return as showrunner, writer and executive producer for the new series. In a statement, Logan said: “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the Penny Dreadful London storylines.

“We will now be grappling with specific historical and real-world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”

Logan will produce through his Desert Wolf Productions banner, with Michael Aguilar and Neal Street Productions’ Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris executive producing alongside him. James Bagley will co-executive produce.
