Hold onto your brollies: Walt Disney Pictures has gone and released a load of Mary Poppins Returns images via Entertainment Weekly, and it actually looks amazing. There’s even a bit of concept art in there too. Honestly, we’re just trying not to nostalgia-cry onto our keyboards.
Before now, the only glimpse of Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins we’d had was in a set photo in which she had her back to the camera, so it’s great to get a closeup. Just look at that hat. We are predicting right now that she’s going to be practically perfect.
The new images also give us a first look at Lin-Manuel Miranda as Poppins’ friend Jack the Street Lamplighter, who seems to be full-on channelling Dick Van Dyke’s chimney sweep Bert with his flat cap and adorably excited facial expressions. Still trying not to cry.
Mary Poppins Returns is set to take place 25 years after the events of the original film, and will see Mary Poppins, um, return to the Banks’ household when Jane and Michael experience a personal loss.
Chicago and Into The Woods‘ Rob Marshall is directing, and the film will feature an original screenplay from David Magee based on childrens’ author PL Travers’ The Mary Poppins Stories. Marshall, John DeLuca and Marc Platt are producing. It will also include an all-new score by Marc Shaiman and original songs by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Joining Blunt and Miranda in the cast are Meryl Streep as Poppins’ cousin Topsy, Colin Firth as bank manager William Weatherall Wilkins, Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks, Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks, Christian Dixon as the Milkman and Angela Lansbury in an as yet unconfirmed role.
Mary Poppins Returns is in cinemas from 21 December 2018. You can buy the original film on Blu-ray for £6.99 from Amazon.co.uk. Get all the latest fantasy news with every issue of SciFiNow.
