Harley Quinn solo movie gets a writer

The Harley Quinn movie could also feature the Birds of Prey

Undoubtedly one of the best things about the Suicide Squad movie (not that there was a massive amount to choose from, if we’re being brutally honest), it’s no real surprise that Warner Bros is pushing ahead with a solo movie centred around its breakout character, Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. In what has to be counted as a giant forward stride with regards it actually getting made, Christina Hodson has been chosen as the film’s chief screenwriter.

Soon to see her feature film debut – Naomi Watts-starrer Shut In – hit cinemas, Hodson’s name is one that is likely to gather traction, what with her Black List pick Unforgettable currently in post production, and IMDb also having her down for Transformers 6 and a Bumblebee solo movie (we’ll believe it when we see it). Clearly the studios have a lot of faith in her.

The Birds of Prey could be hitting the big screen alongside Harley Quinn.

Even more interesting are the rumours – courtesy of The Wrap – that Harley Quinn’s solo movie could be yet another team-up, what with the rumoured involvement of the Birds of Prey. In the comics, the team is an all-female ensemble established by Barbara Gordon and Black Canary, while later going on to be peopled by the likes of Katana and Huntress.

Since Black Canary, Huntress and Katana have already seen popular incarnations on TV screens via Arrow, the prospect of them hitting the big screen isn’t such an unbelievable prospect. Plus, cinema’s first all-female super-team – it would definitely be something. We’re picturing Harley being press-ganged into joining, although then again maybe that would be a bit too similar to Suicide Squad. Perhaps she’ll join of her own accord? No? We’ll keep guessing…

A release date for the Harley Quinn solo movie is yet to be announced. For all the latest movie news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
