DC’s Harley Quinn Birds Of Prey film to be directed by Cathy Yan

The Harley Quinn spin-off film has found its director in Cathy Yan

If, like us, you’ve been wondering what’s happening with DC’s Birds Of Prey film, there’s been a new development: the film is officially set to be directed by Cathy Yan. Yan is best known for her film Dead Pigs, which has been receiving a lot of critical acclaim.

The news that a female director is coming on board for the film is a nice surprise, sspecially after Joss Whedon signed up for and then abruptly dropped out of the Batgirl film. Yan will be the second woman to direct a big budget superhero film following Patty Jenkins’ work on Wonder Woman last year.

The film will act as something of a Harley Quinn solo film as far as the rest of the Suicide Squad is concerned. But she’s not going it alone completely: she’ll be joined by a team of female supers — known in the comics as the Birds of Prey, which debuted in the comics in 1995 — which will presumably include the likes of Black Canary, Huntress, Poison Ivy and maybe even Suicide Squad‘s Katana. However, characters are yet to be confirmed.

Technically the film is being described as a Harley Quinn standalone solo project rather than a Birds Of Prey film, but it’s thought to be an all-female take on Suicide Squad.

The film currently only has Margot Robbie attached to star, but the actress will also be producing through her LuckyChap Entertainment, alongside Sue Kroll for Kroll & Co. Entertainment and Bryan Unkeless for Clubhouse Pictures.

The script has been written by Christina Hodson, who was also recently brought on to write the script for the Batgirl film.
