It seems like every week needs to have a news story about whether or not Ben Affleck is still directing the next Batman film and, if so, when, and whether he’s still excited about the opportunity to do so. A story recently emerged that made it sound like Affleck hadn’t fully committed to stepping behind the camera for the film which we’re all assuming is called The Batman (although Affleck wasn’t sure about that title before, so who knows), but he’s taken the opportunity to clear some stuff up, bro.
While on Jimmy Kimmel Live (via Collider), Affleck said that he’s definitely still directing and would like people to get off his back about when he’s going to make the damn thing.
“I’m gonna direct the next Batman, we’re workin’ on it. It’s one of those things that’s really frustrating because like with Live by Night, it took me a year and a half to write it and get it ready and I worked really hard, it’s just nobody gave a shit. No one was like ‘Where’s Live by Night?!’ But with Batman I keep getting the like, ‘Where’s the fucking Batman?!’ and I’m like ‘Bro, I’m workin’, give me a second!'”
First of all, if you are asking “Where’s Live By Night?!” the answer is: it’s out on Friday, at least here in the UK. So there’s that. Also, Affleck’s “I’m focusing on this film right now” behaviour is not only reasonable, it’s happened loads of times before. Christopher Nolan was endlessly cagey about whether or not he’d make a third Batman film while he was working on and promoting Inception.
Anyway, we’re sure it won’t be long until Affleck says something that’s interpreted as him not directing the fucking Batman and the cycle begins again, but we do always enjoy a good Affleck quote, so we look forward to his next clarification for all the bros out there.
