James Gunn’s Superman movie gets an official title

Since taking over the reins of the DCU (alongside Peter Safran), one of the most exciting DC projects has probably been James Gunn’s Superman movie, which he will write and direct, and which originally was loosely named Superman Legacy.

Well, this 29 February (Superman’s birthday no less), Gunn took to Instagram to reveal that principal photography has begun on the movie AND the movie’s official title… “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy,” Gunn said on the social media platform. “By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.” Alongside the caption, Gunn shared the snow-covered Superman image, which you can see above.

This announcement came not long after James Gunn shared a photo of the upcoming cast – which includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor – as they did their first table read: “After the table read with the Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day.”

That’s not all the exciting Superman posts recently. Star Rachel Brosnahan shared a video on TikTok of her, David Corenswet who will play Clark Kent/Superman and Nicholas Hoult… complete with the iconic Lex Luthor-esque bald head!

Further cast for the movie includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Lex Luthor’s assistant-turned-love interest, Eve Teschmacherr, María Gabriela De Faría as Superman’s antagonist in the movie: The Engineer, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

Superman will be released on 11 July 2025.
