Frozen 4? Director Jennifer Lee teases third movie and maybe more

Frozen director and Chief Creative Officer of Disney Animation, Jennifer Lee, talks about Wish and sheds some light on future Disney projects.

Disney has had plenty of celebrations this year to mark its 100th birthday, including new animated movie Wish, written and executive produced by Jennifer Lee, who is also the Chief Creative Officer of Disney Animation and director of Frozen 1 and Frozen 2.

In a recent interview, Lee not only delves into Wish but also teases the future of Frozen.

Wish is set in the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

“We really fell in love with each of these characters as we were creating the film,” said Lee. “Asha is such a special character. She begins the film in a good place — loving where she lives, feeling supported by her friends and family. But like so many people in their late teens, she learns the world around her is not perfect, and instead of turning a blind eye she confronts the wrong and inspires her whole community.”

In Wish, Asha begins the film in a good place but learns the world around her is not perfect.

As the Chief Creative Officer of Disney Animation, Lee also shed some light on future Disney projects, including returning to some familiar favourites: “We are working on so many exciting new, original projects we hope to share soon as well as the continuations of stories from characters and worlds we love like Zootopia and Frozen,” she said. “We have about ten projects currently in development, and each of them is so exciting.”

And what about our favourite sisters from Arendelle? Lee says the team are currently “hard at work” on the new movie and that they are “deeply excited about the story we are shaping together”.

In fact, Lee says the story is “so epic it may not fit into just one film”. Ooo crytpic! We’re yet to be told the release date for Frozen 3 but we do know that Lee will not be directing the third movie in the series.
