Shannara TV series is a go, new director is hired

Jon Favreau-produced Shannara TV show gets full series and a new director

Shannara-MTV-TV-seriesMTV’s TV show based on Terry Brooks’ epic fantasy series Shannara has been ordered to full series.

THR reports that the show, executive produced by Jon Favreau, will be getting a full series order of 10 episodes as MTV hopes to find its own Game Of Thrones.

Favreau produces with Al Gough and Miles Millar, the pair responsible for Smallville, but the Iron Man director won’t be stepping behind the camera.

Directorial duties for the first two episodes has fallen to Jonathan Liebesman, director of the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The first season will be based on the second book in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara, and will see Brooks’ epic saga finally brought to life after the rights were bought in 2007.

Shannara takes place thousands of years after the destruction of our civilization. The story centers on the Shannara family, whose descendants are empowered with ancient magic and whose adventures continuously reshape the future of the world.”

We’ve seen plenty of attempts to mimic Game Of Thrones success on the big screen, with plenty of movies trying to replicate the blend of intrigue, costume drama, brutal violence and frequent sex scenes, but this feels like it could potentially be the first real contender on the small screen. For a show to really take on Game Of Thrones, you need a Game Of Thrones budget. We’ll have to wait and see what Shannara has to offer.
