Star Trek: Strange New Worlds renewed and Lower Decks ending

Bye bye Boimler?!

As first reported by Variety, it’s bittersweet news from the world of Star Trek as Strange New Worlds officially gets renewed for a fourth season by Paramount+, while the animated series Lower Decks will conclude with its fifth season.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of Strange New Worlds, we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said executive producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers and executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a statement. “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

Some of the people behind both series took to social media at the announcement, including Anson Mount (who plays Captain Pike in Strange New Worlds): “Like many of you, I am very sad to see Lower Decks coming to an end. A truly brilliant led by the always impressive Mike McMahanshow with a phenomenal cast. What a run!”

Paramount+ has not renewed Star Trek: Lower Decks.

However, there is a slight hope for Lower Decks with star Jack Quaid taking to socials saying he’d make many more series if the show can find a new home… “I can’t begin to tell you what an honor it’s been to be a part of this show and the Star Trek universe at large,” said Quaid who plays Brad Boimler on Lower Decks. “I am unbelievably grateful for five awesome seasons with this wonderful family. I want to thank each and every person who put so much of their hard work and talent into every episode. You are AMAZING.

“The good news is that everyone who makes Lower Decks LOVES making Lower Decks. I could play Boimler for 17 more seasons. No joke. I’m serious. I love that purple-haired nerd. Hopefully we find a new home, but until then please look forward to an amazing season five (airing this fall).”

The two series recently had a crossover episode during Strange New Worlds season three with ‘Those Old Scientists’ which saw Lower Decks characters Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner go back in time to join the live-action crew of the Enterprise in Strange New Worlds. Boimler and Mariner voiceover actors Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid both played the live-action versions of their animated characters (pictured below).

Season 3 of Strange New Worlds will premiere in 2025. The fifth and final series of Star Trek: Discovery is currently showing on Paramount+
