According to Entertainment Weekly, the first two standalone Star Wars movies – separately of JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode 7 – will be focused on Han Solo and Boba Fett.
“A young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum.”
The Han Solo movie is reported to be set between Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge Of The Sith and Star Wars: Episode 4 – A New Hope, while the Boba Fett movie could take place between any of the movies in the original Star Wars trilogy, but common sense would suggest it will be between A New Hope and Star Wars: Episode 5 – The Empire Strikes Back, before he becomes to closely involved in the plot of the existing movies.
Entertainment Weekly adds, “In addition to bringing back two fan-favorite characters as the leads of their own films, the Han Solo and Boba Fett projects would also allow Darth Vader, in full-on black death-metal gear, to return as a villain, since placing the spin-offs within the original trilogy would mean he is still alive and hissing. That timeline would also open the door for a return visit with everyone’s favorite degenerate slug-like gangster, Jabba the Hutt.”
Yesterday, Walt Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger confirmed the plan for spin-off films – teased by Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy in an earlier interview – in the company’s quarterly earnings report.
The screenwriters working on the standalone films are Simon Kinberg (Mr & Mrs Smith, Sherlock Holmes) and Lawrence Kasdan (screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders Of The Lost Ark), although whether they’re doing one project each or co-writing both is unknown.
