Shadowhunters cancelled, ending after 2-hour Season 3 finale

Shadowhunters has been cancelled by Freeform, but it’s getting a proper finale

US network Freeform has officially pulled the plug on Shadowhunters after three seasons. The cancellation came after producer Constantin Film lost its output deal with Netflix, meaning it could no longer afford the fantasy series.

“We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favourite,” Freeform said in a statement. “However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season.”

Although the show is ending before its time, fans won’t have to worry about being left without closure or, even worse, a cliffhanger ending.

“As big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending,” the statement continued.

“The 12 episodes will air in spring 2019. We want to thank our talented creators, producers, cast and crew along with our colleagues at Constantin for their hard work and dedication and to Cassie Clare for her incredible book series. We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama.”

Though the show has earnt itself a strong following of dedicated fans, its ratings haven’t been the best. The first half of the third season, which aired on Freeform in the US this spring, averaged around 500,000 live-same day viewers.

The second half of Season 3 was set to air in August this year, but will now be released with the two-hour series finale in spring 2019.

Shadowhunters is loosely based on The Mortal Instruments by author Cassandra Clare, and was developed by Ed Decter. It stars Katherine McNamara as Clarissa ‘Clary Fray’ Fairchild, an art student who finds out she is a Shadowhunter (a human born with angelic blood who protects humans from demons) on her eighteenth birthday, and is inducted by the Brooklyn branch of Shadowhunters and taught to fight.

The show also stars Dominic Sherwood as Jace Herondale, Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, Harry Shum Jr as Magnus Bane, Alisha Wainwright as Maia Roberts, David Castro as Raphael Santiago and Nicola Correia-Damude as Maryse Lightwood.

Shadowhunters Season 3 will conclude in spring 2019 on Freeform in the US and Netflix in the UK. Get all the latest fantasy news with every issue of SciFiNow.
