The big-budget reboot of Power Rangers is on the way, and here’s the first look at Elizabeth Banks’ villain Rita Repulsa, courtesy of EW.
As fans will note, she’s looking pretty different to how she did in the TV show, and the star of Wet Hot American Summer and The Hunger Games explained to People that they’re going for a fresh approach to the baddie.
“It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa,” she said. “We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.”
“I’ve never played a villain before,” she continued. When asked what she was particularly excited about playing, her answer was “world domination – and being unpredictable as a character.” We’re huge fans of Banks. In fact, we can’t think of a performance that she’s given that we didn’t like, so we’re very much on board with the idea of her playing a spiky villain with dreams of world domination, and we’re not going to let a thing like an outfit update change that.
The film also stars Naomi Scott, Becky G, RJ Cyler, Dacre Montgomery and Ludi Lin as the five Rangers, and is directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac).
“Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.”
Power Rangers is released on 24 March 2017. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
