New Spider Man movie closing in on its Aunt May

Spider-Man’s new Aunt May won’t be what you’re expecting, but we approve anyway

Marisa Tomei Spider Man
Marisa Tomei will be the new Aunt May in the upcoming Spider Man reboot

With Tom Holland being announced as the one who would portray Peter Parker in his first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we weren’t expecting another castingĀ  announcement quite so soon, despite it being Comic-Con week and everything. But more news we have, with Variety reporting that The Wrestler and Crazy Stupid Love star Marisa Tomei is being targeted to play Aunt May.

At first glance it may seem like a bit of an… odd casting choice, considering that the traditional representation of May has been of a senior citizen, and Tomei undoubtedly looks a lot younger than previous takes on the character.

Then again, Tomei is 50, and Holland is 19 – there’s nothing unrealistic about the age gaps between the two characters, especially since Marvel Studios seem keen to present a younger take on the wall crawler.

Moreover, putting all this to onse side is the fact that Tomei is an excellent actress, bringing warmth and charm to any role she inhabits. Coupled with he Best Supporting Actress win for My Cousin Vinny in 1992, as well as nominations for In The Bedroom and The Wrestler, and we have an actress that the MCU is lucky to count among its number.

Jon Watts will direct the as-yet untitled Spider-Man reboot, with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal on board as producers.

The Spider-Man reboot will be released in cinemas on 28 July 2017. For more about the comics that inspired the film, pick up the 100 All-Time Greatest Comics: Revised Edition bookazine now.
