Neill Blomkamp teases Newt in Alien 5, affirmative

Looks like we might be seeing Newt in Alien 5 if it ever happens

It’s Alien day, and it looks like Neill Blomkamp wanted to make sure we hadn’t forgotten about his little Alien project by posting a new bit of concept art on Instagram featuring everyone’s favourite plucky survivor of LV-426: Newt!

Sigourney Weaver recently gave fans hope for the movie, saying that she would be very surprised if Blomkamp’s Alien movie did not move forward once Ridley Scott was done with Alien: Covenant.

Blomkamp announced that he would be working on another project in the interim, but it’s nice to see that he’s not forgotten about his Alien either. This is obviously not confirmation that Newt will be in the film, let alone that original star Carrie Henn will return, but Michael Biehn (aka Corporal Dwayne Hicks) did previously tell Icons Of Fright that the movie will be a “passing of the torch” to her.

“They’re planning on bringing me and Newt back,” he said “and at this point Newt will be around 27 years old. I know that every actress in Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it’s really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt. It would keep the franchise alive and the studios would make money, because that’s what the bottom line is now: money.”

The lust for money aside, it remains to be seen just when Fox is planning on fitting Alien 5 (or whatever it ends up being called) into their schedule, fitting around Scott’s further Alien movies. Alien: Covenant is currently shooting in Australia, but he’s planning a trilogy, so we may have to wait a while. Still, the prospect of Ripley, Hicks and Newt on screen together is pretty bloody exciting, isn’t it?

Alien: Covenant will be released on 4 August 2017. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
