Moore: Caprica DVD “didn’t quite play out the way we wanted”

Ronald D Moore talks to SciFiNow at MCM Expo.

Caprica+photo+1Speaking to SciFiNow at MCM Expo in London on Saturday, Caprica mastermind Ronald D Moore discussed the show’s somewhat unconventional launch strategy, in releasing the pilot on DVD ahead of the show’s TV debut.

“Well, you know, hindsight’s 20/20, as they say. At the time that Syfy proposed putting the pilot out on DVD ahead of the show, I thought it was a great idea, so I’m not going to say ‘oh, they were idiots’, I mean I thought it was a really smart plan and wasn’t something anyone had done before.”

The intent of the DVD release was to generate buzz for the show, but Moore debates whether, in retrospect, that was a good move. “And I thought it would be a really good idea to build this audience, to put it out there and get people excited and get them talking about the show. Doesn’t seem to have happened that way – so if we were to do it over again knowing what we know now, maybe we wouldn’t have done that. But it was a good shot – it just didn’t quite play out the way we wanted.”

Caprica returns for the second half of its first season later in the year.
