We’re very excited to share the exclusive first look at Imitation Girl, the upcoming indie sci-fi from debut writer-director Natasha Kermani and starring genre favourite Lauren Ashley Carter (Darling, The Woman, Jug Face).
We’ve been given a set of first-look images ahead of the film’s premiere at Cinequest Film Festival on 4 March, and here’s the trailer for you!
“A mysterious being appears in the Southwestern desert and assumes the identity of the first person she sees – a woman on a magazine cover. Taken in by Iranian immigrants, she forms an understanding of her new surroundings, and comes to appreciate the beauty and the sadness of her new world. At the same time, Julianna, Imitation’s world-weary earthly double, knows both glitz and grit working as an entertainer in New York City, where her fraying life and relationships threaten her dreams for an audition that might finally set her on a happier path. On learning of Juliana’s existence, Imitation heads to New York, where only by sacrificing themselves to each other can the cosmic twins complete a full portrait of a woman.”
When we spoke to Carter for the UK release of Mickey Keating’s stylish chiller Darling, we asked what we could expect from Imitation Girl.
“Imitation Girl is a feature written and directed by Natasha Kermani,” she told us. “She’s one of the founders of Illium Pictures who co-produced Pod. It’s a sci-fi drama, an alien life form lands on earth and the first image that she comes across is an amateur porn star in New York City, so I get to play both of these roles.
The alien imitation travels across the country to find this real woman that she looks like. You see the journey of a completely foreign life form and also this poor girl who got into porn just to pay the bills but kind of blew up.”
This looks like a fascinating drama, and we’re huge fans of Carter’s work, and, simply put, we can’t wait to see it. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Imitation Girl and we’ll keep you updated on the UK release.
