Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen casts Milla Jovovich as the Blood Queen

Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen has found its Blood Queen

More stellar casting news for Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen has emerged: the film has found its sub-titular Blood Queen in Resident Evil and The Fifth Element‘s Milla Jovovich. Nice one.

Jovovich’s Blood Queen is set to be the film’s main villain, but that’s about the only movie character detail we know so far. In the Hellboy comics the Queen of Blood, previously known as Nimue, lived during the reign of King Arthur and used her romantic connection to Merlin to have him imprisoned in a grave for eternity. Without Merlin around to keep her in line, she was eventually driven to madness by her knowledge of magic.

She will be joining David Harour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy himself and Ian McShane (American GodsDeadwood) as Professor Broom.

Director Neil Marshall is now fully focused on bringing the reboot to life after completing the pilot episode of Netflix’s Lost In Space series, and is due to start filming in the UK in September.

Information regarding Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen‘s plot has been very vague up until now, but we do know that it will be more horror-oriented than Guillermo del Toro’s version, it will make use of practical effects where it can, and it will be R-rated.

Speaking to Mick Garris on the filmmaker’s Post Mortem podcast, Marshall said: “We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off. It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make. It’s not like I’m going to force it to be R-rated, but if it happens to come out that way, just because of my own sensibilities, then fine. And nobody’s going to stop us.

“So, that’s the main [difference]. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that.”
