According to Variety, Dog Food and Camp X-Ray star Cory Michael Smith has been added to the cast of Fox’s pre-Batman TV show Gotham.
Smith will be playing Edward Nigma, the man who eventually becomes The Riddler – most recently played by a gurning and shrieking Jim Carrey in 1995’s gurning and shrieking Batman Forever.
In the comics, The Riddler has been revised from the straight-up gimmick villain of his movie roles and early appearances, working as an informant and problem solver for mob boss Carmine Falcone in the seminal Long Halloween and aiding Batman in its follow-up Dark Victory. More recently he was reformed almost completely, and although the New 52 reboot returned him to his status as Joker-lite, there’s something really unique to draw on if the show chooses too.
Unpredictable, obsessive and ingenious, it would be good to see an Edward Nigma capable of playing off both sides in Gotham.
