True to the superbly gory and stomach-churning trailers, the Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell-produced reboot of Evil Dead has gotten an NC-17 rating in the US.

Director Fede Alvarez tweeted, “Was proud of scoring a NC-17 when submitted! But we had to cut stuff out to get an R and get the film into theaters.”

What this means in the UK is while there’s a slim chance we’ll get the original NC-17 one (likely to be rated 18, which is more likely to be shown in British cinemas than an NC-17 movie is in American ones) or, most likely, be supplied the R rated cut, which would be likely to score a 15.

Obviously, there’s no guarantee these things translate directly, or that we’d be getting less of a film just because they don’t show the demon tree going, you know, in, but horror fans will doubtless feel cheated regardless, especially if the films doesn’t live up to expectations.

Evil Dead is in cinemas 19 April 2013. Pick up the original The Evil Dead on DVD for £9.65 and Blu-ray for £8.29 from Amazon.co.uk.
