Edgar Wright announces Scott Pilgrim anime – and the whole cast is returning

A new anime series for Scott Pilgrim will be coming to Netflix and the cast of the 2010 movie will be returning to voice their characters.

Scott Pilgrim

This is not a drill! We’re heading back to evil exes and battling bands: Edgar Wright has confirmed that an anime show based on his 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – adapted from the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley – is “imminent” and that the cast from the movie will be returning to voice their characters.

“After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of ‘Scott Pilgrim’, I’m thrilled to say one is IMMINENT, with the whole cast back together and… you are going to lose your minds,” Wright announced on social media.

Directed by Wright, the 2010 movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was set in a magically realistic version of Toronto, where young Scott Pilgrim had to defeat his new girlfriend’s seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart. With its videogame-style direction and a great cast (including Michael Cera, Anna Kendrick and Brie Larson), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has firmly cemented itself into geek pop culture.

“One of the proudest, most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim,” Wright continued. “Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&As and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the gang on an actual project. Until now…”

Yep, in stepped Netflix and now the world of Scott Pilgrim will continue in anime format, with the cast returning to voice their characters.

“Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer Ben David Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim with the geniuses at [animation studio] Science SARU that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also…well, just watch it,” Wright explained.

“It might be the best thing I’ve ever worked on,” added O’Malley, “and I’m excited to share it with everyone soon.”

The new anime series will be coming soon to Netflix and will star Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman and Elle Wong.
