Remember the new Battlestar Galactica movie that’s currently in development at? You’d be forgiven for letting it slip your mind, especially considering how many attempts at reigniting the franchise there have been over the years. This time, however, things look to be progressing that bit further, with actual producers (Michael De Luca, Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark) attached. Now, according to Deadline, a writer has even been hired: Lisa Joy.
It marks Joy’s second big gig, seeing as how she’s also writing and executive producing another big-budget remake: HBO’s Westworld TV series. Beyond that, she’s also worked on spy drama Burn Notice and a few episodes of Bryan Fuller’s Pushing Daisies, representing a healthy CV that should provide fertile ground for the latest BSG take.
But that’s not all. According to the same report, a director is also in the frame, with Francis Lawrence (the director of three out of four instalments in the Hunger Games series, as well as the likes of I Am Legend and Constantine) reportedly circling the movie. His output has been of mixed quality, but considering his experience coming off the back of yet another big-budget film series, he would look to be a safe pair of hands.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, the original 24-episode 1978 series went on to be a massive cult hit, before being followed by the relatively short-lived Galactica 1980.
But most people’s experience of the series started with the reimagined Battlestar Galactica in 2004, which was a huge critical hit, delving into such topical subject matter as the war on terror, torture and identity. Subsequent spinoffs Caprica and Blood & Chrome have been less successful, but it was only a matter of time before the series returned.
A release date for the Battlestar Galactica movie is yet to be announced. You can download Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Manual from GreatDigitalMags.com now.
