Annihilation featurette promises a film that’s inspiring for women and kick-ass for men

The cast of Annihilation talk about being in a genre film led by five women

Alex Garland’s Annihilation is just around the corner in the US (and somewhere in the not too distant future on Netflix everywhere else) and the early word is extremely positive. There’s a new featurette to hype the release, in which the stars of the film (Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Tuva Novotny and Jennifer Jason Leigh) discuss just how unusual and exciting it is to see a sci-fi movie led by five female characters.

“Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X – a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscape and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.”

The film is based on the novel by Jeff VanderMeer and also stars Oscar Isaac, Benedict Wong and David Gyasi.

Annihilation is released on 23 February in the US and will be available on Netflix later this year in the rest of the world. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
