After Sony’s somewhat lacking The Dark Tower film failed to impress in 2017, many fans of Stephen King’s story breathed a sigh of relief when Amazon Studios announced that it would be attempting to right the wrongs with a TV series.
That dream is now dead, following the news that Amazon has now gone and cancelled the series.
According to Deadline, the studio felt that the series pilot was “not on the level of other large-scope elevated genre series,” and was therefore not worth bothering with. The news comes just days after Amazon set a full cast for its upcoming epic Lord Of The Rings series adaptation, so the new bar has clearly been set.
The Dark Tower series was coming from executive producer and showrunner Glen Mazzara, with Sam Strike starring as Roland Deschain and Jasper Pääkkönen as the Man in Black. The rest of the cast was believed to have included the likes of Michael Rooker, Jerome Flynn and Joana Ribeiro, though none of their roles were confirmed.
The series was set to be a more faithful retelling of King’s beloved book series, but it looks like fans will just have to make do with Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba’s versions of the Gunslinger and Walter for the time being.
