Universal is rebooting The Mummy franchise, with Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts providing the script. “I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus,” Spaihts said in a statement on Variety. “To go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before.”
Three films in the main series of The Mummy have been released, the last one being the dire Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor in 2008. Prior to that, the other two were throwaway fun, with Brendan Fraser’s vaguely goofy performances being the most fun aspects of the 1999 and 2001 flicks.
