Morgan first look at Kate Mara and Paul Giamatti in AI thriller

Check out the first images from Luke Scott’s sci-fi Morgan

The first pictures from Luke Scott’s AI thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, Paul Giamatti, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook and Toby Jones, have arrived from EW.

It’s the first film directed by Scott (the son of Ridley, who’s on board as a producer), and stars Mara (Fantastic Four, The Martian) as “as a corporate troubleshooter who’s sent to a remote location to evaluate an artificially created, rapidly developing lifeform.”

That rapidly developing lifeform is played by Taylor-Joy, who gave a stunning performance in Robert Eggers’ terrifying horror The Witch.

“What Morgan really alludes to is human beings becoming, in a sense, the creator,” Scott told EW. “Not in a traditional religious sense, but an idea that we have the capabilities to become our own creator. And what I suspect could happen — we’ve seen it in all these movies, whether it’s Frankenstein or Metropolis — it’s the creation of a being that is greater than the creator. That is fascinating to me, and it definitely feels like a next stage of evolution in the real world.”

It’s a strong time for AI sci-fi, with Alex Garland’s brilliant Ex Machina still in recent memory and Channel 4’s excellent drama Humans returning for a second series later this year. We’ll have a better idea of whether Morgan can live up to the competition when the trailer arrives later today.

Morgan is released on 2 September. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
