Exclusive: Stargate Extinction to shoot in November?

by James Rundle

SciFiNow recently spoke with Rachel Luttrell, who played Teyla Emmagan on Stargate Atlantis, about the series and the upcoming direct-to-DVD release Stargate Extinction. While she was unable to definitively confirm anything regarding the production, she did share her suspicions about when the cast and crew may reunite to shoot the feature.

sgat_teyla_400x400SciFiNow recently spoke with Rachel Luttrell, who played Teyla Emmagan on Stargate Atlantis, about the series and the upcoming direct-to-DVD release Stargate Extinction. While she was unable to definitively confirm anything regarding the production, she did share her suspicions about when the cast and crew may reunite to shoot the feature.

“There’s a rumour that it’ll start shooting in November,” said Luttrell in a telephone interview on Friday evening. “That once [Stargate] Universe is done with its season production then we’ll move into it, but none of that has been confirmed.” Production on the series is still in the embryonic stages however, with none of the cast aware of the plot yet or basic details. “You know what, I wish I could [tell you about Extinction], in fact it’s sad to say but you’ve actually revealed the title to me before I knew it,” the actress admitted. “We know nothing about it, and by we, I mean my fellow actors and I. We haven’t had an opportunity to read anything or to talk with our writers about it yet.”

Stargate Atlantis stars Rachel Luttrell, Joe Flanigan, Robert Picardo, Jason Momoa and David Hewlett. The series ended its run earlier this year with the conclusion of its fifth season, making way for a new series named Stargate Universe. The final season is released onto DVD on 8 September 2009, priced at £59.99.

You forgot to mention Jewel Staite who is also one of the main cast!

    • James Rundle said:

She is, but for the sake of expediency and not having a cast list a paragraph long, I left her off.

    • Stargate Fan said:

But she’s one of the title credit characters, not just a regular guest! She’s as much a part of the primary cast as any of the others you mentioned :( She really deserves to be there :)

    • Pat said:

She was only a main cast for 1 year or 1 1/2 years..all the others mentioned have been in it for 4 or 5 years. To me she was never really a full part of the cast and replaced Paul.

    • Pat said:

Actually, after re-reading it RP was only a main cast for 1 year and I think Torri should be been mentioned before him. However, that’s neither here nor there as they say. The show was pushed aside for a different show and that is a shame.

    • JJ said:

I’m actually glad he forgot to metion her. LOL

    • James Rundle said:

I’m staggered that there are five comments about this.

Looking forward to the Atlantis movie, and anything about the Atlantis cast in general (especially Joe Flanigan).
I’m a fan of Stargate Alantis only, not a fan of the Stargate franchise in general. I kept watching Atlantis faithfully for 5 years because of Joe Flanigan first and foremost, and I loved the chemistry between Joe, Jason, Rachel, David, Torri, Paul (McGuillion) and Robert (Picardo). Those 7 actors together in all the 5 seasons would’ve been the perfect cast for me.

I won’t be watching the new show SGU. Nothing I heard so far sounds appealing to me. Not interested.

    • Laura said:

You’re surprised Mr Rundle? To be honest, I thought there would have been more! Keeping on topic though, can’t say ill be watching the new ones either.

    • James Rundle said:

Surprised? No, rather disappointed at the nitpicking perhaps.

You’re not looking forward to Universe? How come?

    • Thomas said:

I really hope they get the mix of personalities right for SGU. None of the new actors make much of an impression on me thus far based upon the preview. SG-1 was great, and I really ended up liking Atlantis as well. It was a bit of a bummer that the show ended so early.

In the end, what has made the Stargate series so good is that you have a group of characters who became loyal friends through thick and thin.

      Don’t screw that concept up.

I am looking forward to the Stargate Extinction movie. I miss the old characters.

You’d need another McKay and Ronan type; it was the same with Teal’c and O’niell. They really need a duo of highly acceptable comedy cast, I know this would be hard to bear with people but I didn’t really like a lot of the teams. The characters carter and Daniel just kept repeating the same things over and over with Daniel being a pain in the ass with the I’m not dead thing and carter being over technical with nearly no other jokes than the episodes with clones or duplicates; Sheppard on the other hand was overly heroic and somewhat dull with the combat while Taela was nothing but an over worried mother.

    • christine ethier said:

David Hewlett just twittered that it looks the movie will not be made. Anyone heard more on that?

    • Ian Beale said:

I really think they should have carried on the seasons of Atlantis while still doing Stargate Universe like what they did for 3 years with SG-1 and Atlantis and maybe have a few crossovers but this Atlantis movie still looks cool. I’m gonna watch Universe but I’m not getting my hopes up. I don’t want to see this but what I think I’m seeing is them trying to milk a perfectly good franchise. I hope I’m wrong.

    • Larry said:

I think that stargate Universe is amazing. For the people that compare it to the likes of voyager its nothing like it. Surely if thats the case voyager is just a rip off from lost in space ect..?? I love the fact they can’t stop and have limited time on planets. I hope this series keeps going. Also can’t wait for Atlantis movie because i actually liked that better than sg1. Sg1 is still fantastic tho!

    • Joe Foxworthy said:

      Hi,
My name is Joe Foxworthy and I absolutly love the stargate saga!!!
I have watched every single episode of SG1, Atlantis and Universe thou i was a little dissapointed with the atlantis ending……. It was a little indisisive….. But its great news to hear about the up and coming movie!!!!!
Maybe it’ll give us a little bit of closure for Atlantis… HOPEFULLY..
When is extingtion gonna be realised????
Also is Universe gonna introduce an enemy (Go’auld, Ori, Wraith etc….) As its good watching the crew find their feet on Destiny but theres only so far you can go with that.
Please could you give me some answers either on this wall or to my email.
      Thanks

I was bitten late by the SG1 / SGa series – got into SG1 on DVD. It didn’t take me long to start watching 2 episodes each time I turned on the TV.

The progression of SG1 to SGA was great and it had me hanging out for more.

Now that I have seen the last episode of SGA I feel like I have been cheated. It is like showing a piece of candy to a baby and when they reach out to get it, you take it away.

I am quite sure that the producers of the series really do not know how popular the series really is. I know they go by ratings and DVD sales, but do they really know how many fans they have.

I did not watch it on TV – A relative loaned me the 1st season SG1 and I was hooked. Two of my family also became hooked and they have been telling everyone about it too.

Come on producers – You may have impressive ratings and DVD sales, but you really have no idea on how many people are fans.

You introduced the fact that SG1 was happening while SGA was on screen – Bring back a NEW series that has both in it.

    • Paul Jacobs said:

OK – Some facts to support my previous claim.

I made a point of doing a mini survey with 20 people of mixed ages and mixed careers. The results are as follows.

Someone other than the person being asked had people in their house who regularly watched SG1 or SGA – 6 out of 20

People asked who watched and enjoyed SG1 or SGA because it was the program on the station they were watching – 4 out of 20

People who regularly watched and looked forward to SG1 or SGA – 5 out of 20

People who knew of the programs and chose not to watch them – 3 out of 20

people who did not know what SG1 or SGA were – 2 out of 20

      By my mini survey calculations:

Avid fans watching most episodes – More than 50% of the homes in Australia

Homes who had the TV tuned into SG1 or SGA on a casual or regular basis – Around 75% of the people asked.

I did not lead anyone on in this survey. The people asked were my clients and their staff.

Sad that the producers can not see that they had an epic.

Wake up guys…. Find a way to make it more profitable if that was your reason for cancelling.

scrap keller carson deserves a role in the movie

    • Bobarino said:

Looking forward to the new movies, but am concrened they will never happen.

SGU is terrible. Trying to turn the Stargate franchise into a soap opera like Galactica. Simply terrible

On a note on SGU, the next episode will have a big space battle, and later in Season 1 there will an old enemy from SG-1. But I wont say more… for now ;-)

    • chris said:

I cant wait for SGA the movie i want to know when it is coming out. I watched all of the SG-1 and SGA and own them all and also like SGU i cant wait to buy the newest stargate movie and put it next to all of the rest of my Stargate seasons and movies.

    • chris said:

I have every stargate movie and season on dvd and i cant wait for SGA the movie to come good job i love watching stargates

Sooooo glad to find hope that Stargate Extinction is still “possibly” moving forward:) I have been going through SGA withdrawals since they abruptly ended and I need my Todd fix… rewatching all 5 seasons (just got it) over and over is just not cutting it!!! As of right now, I’m on a Stargate Universe strike until they finish what they started with SGA. I hate being left hanging, there are so many loose ends that can either lead to new beginnings with the SGA movie, or they need to tie up those loose ends! “I’m dyin’ ova here.” Yep, I need a Todd fix, LOL!

Hi I have a quick question. Did Michael Shanks play Dr Daniel Jackson in Stargate the movie?

    • James Rundle said:

James Spader played Jackson in the 1994 film.

    • Gaynor said:

There is so much talk about “Stargate Extinction” being made getting around the various Stargate web sites BUT none of it has actually come from the writers. You would think that they would be bragging about it on their web sites if they had any intentions of making the movie in the near future. This has me very worried and sadly I have grave fears that it is just not going to happen. I do so hope that I am wrong, I would love to see an Atlantis movie happen as SGU just doesn’t do it for me.
Come on guys, commit yourselves to a date.

    • Julie Merritt said:

I hope the movie will start shooting in November. I want them to bring a good ending for the season 5 finally. I also hope they will pair Shepperd and Teyla or like I saw on Yutube that they were pairing Shepperd and Todd in the show, that they will pair them. I just as a Shepperd fan want them to pair him with someone. Also are they going to bring the Geni in?

    • Julie Merritt said:

I agree I to not only need a Todd fix, I also need a Shepperd fix.

    • Julie Merritt said:

I read on SG campaigners, Joe mallozzi’s blog that SGA movie is not going to be made. I hope they will get to the other websites and tell them. I doubt they were even going to make the movie at all.

    • Angel G. said:

I was very skeptic about stargate as serial. But somehow i watched an episode. Found the star wars type of movie that i needed more than ever to justify my existence :-) …. I`d like to create a poll on the topic “Would you decide to go to Atlantis if it was real and you had the chance to choose, knowing that you may be killed there ?” My answer ‘d be positive.

      good morning campers
my names up top I.F.I im from the U.K i have watched all the stargate episodes that have been aired to date and i have to say that while each series has its own identity they have all started at the same pace which to say is slow which is why a lot of people have found series followin sg1 slightly boring so what im saying for the benefit of those of you who gave up on atlantis and universe after just two or three episodes give it a chance people it will grow on you just like sg1 did i mean im not the biggest fan of david hewlett (meridith RODNEY mackay) i still didnt give up on atlantis and was devistated to see it end but universe dosnt have the seperation that atlantis had to start with i mean who gives a monkeys about aincient com stones take a gun and find a way to contacked earth without getting half the cast killed or downloading the info from the aincient database into someones head i.e make an effort dont just call home and ask what to do make a choise on your own people im just hoping that the second half of season 2 of universe can pull its arse out of the mud and give it at least another three seasons like atlantis had and yes mgm need to go ahead with extinction we need to see the raith finnished with and no more pulling an unexplored interstellar drive out mackays ares at the last minuite like a wormhole drive get enough zero point moduals for the job and stop making the raith look hard when one zat blast is enough to knck them down…

    • Darius-Martin said:

no offence to anyone but i watched one episode of SGU and hated it and the only stargate for me is stargate Atlantis.

    • Julie Merritt said:

I am not surprised that they are not doing SGA Extinction. I doubt they were even going to do it. I have read that Brad Wright and MGM are working together to finish SGU story in a new series Echoes. They could done the same for SGA. Joe Flanigan fans want him as a regular on Echoes as Sheppard and a Sheppard pairing. This shows that they do not care about SGA fans or SGA.
