Even with the addition of the penis-shaped rock that Kirk uses to brain a Lurch-like character, this remains an excellently tense episode, with some truly excellent matte backdrop work that the show became so famous for. It’s easily one of our favourite episodes of the first season, and includes most of the series cliches.
7. A Taste Of Armageddon

Not often listed as one of the very best of the Star Trek stable, we loved this episode for its distinctly speculative science fiction plotline. On a planet, a war is fought with a neighbouring world not with guns and ships, but by computer. The losses are real, however, as the casualty calculations force citizens to report to termination booths.
