Speaking to MTV, Gambit star Channing Tatum revealed that while negotiations are still very much ongoing, the actor has high hopes for the fan-favourite X-Men character finally getting his dues on screen in a standalone movie before the next great team-up in X-Men: Apocalypse.
“Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward,” confirmed Tatum. “Obviously there’s nothing [official]. There are only conversations and dreams right now, really.
“We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”
Speaking to We Got This Covered, Tatum clarified the gameplan, saying, “It will probably just be a standalone film before Apocalypse. That’s if it does well. If it doesn’t do well, I probably won’t make it into Apocalypse [laughs].”
X-Men: Days Of Future Past is in cinemas now, while X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release 19 May 2016. Find out more about the comics that inspired the film with our awesome new digital magazine Uncanny Comics.
