The World War Z sequel has been given a release date of 9 June 2017 by Paramount.

Variety reports that the date has been set for the follow-up to 2013’s zombie epic, which suffered through a hugely troubled production that was well-reported. Fans of the book seemed divided on the film, but it made more than $540 million so a sequel obviously makes sense.

World War Z 2 (which we assume will get a catchier title) will be directed by JA Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible), who’s stepping into Marc Forster’s shoes. The script comes from Steven Knight, the man behind Locke, Eastern Promises and Peaky Blinders. Pitt is definitely returning as Gerry Lane, but there’s no word about whether Mireille Enos will return as his wife.

We’re interested to see if the lessons learned on the first film will actually be applied. Given how bad the production sounded, the film managed some incredible sequences and emerged as a surprisingly solid movie (although the finale was a damp squib).
