Wonder Woman 1984 confirms title and returning Chris

Patty Jenkins announces one major returning Chris to the cast of Wonder Woman 2

This post contains spoilers for last year’s Wonder Woman, so if you haven’t seen it yet, just go and do that first.

Production on Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman sequel is underway, and to celebrate the director and star Gal Gadot each tweeted a still and seemed to confirm the title: Wonder Woman 1984. Gadot’s brought Diana into the 80s, and Jenkins‘ brought Chris Pine…

This comes as a bit of a shock, given that the dashing Steve Trevor went and sacrificed himself at the end of the first movie. However, we’re glad that we’ll have the chance to see more of Gadot and Pine’s excellent chemistry. And, frankly, we are loving how bright and colourful these stills are.

The film also stars Kristen Wiig as the villainous Cheetah and Pedro Pascal in an unconfirmed role. Jenkins wrote the screenplay with Dave Callaham and Geoff Johns.

Warner Bros’ DC film slate has been undergoing a quiet but significant overhaul over the last few months, with personal changes and a noticeable lack of films flooding into production, but the Wonder Woman sequel has always been a top priority given the film’s incredible success. We’ve got Aquaman in December, Shazam! in April, Wonder Woman 1984 next November…then it’s anyone’s guess as to what will come next.

Todd Phillips’ Joker film (potentially starring Joaquin Phoenix) and Margot Robbie’s Birds Of Prey seem to be the safest bets to head into production first, possibly followed by that Suicide Squad sequel. The Flash seems to have finally settled on directors with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein but things have been quiet there for a while, it’s still very early days on Matt Reeves’ Batman (which looks like it probably won’t star Ben Affleck) and Green Lantern Corps still hasn’t settled on a director. Christina Hodson is working on a Batgirl screenplay which the studio seems to be excited about, and of course there are a bundle of potential Joker projects. So…place your bets.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be released on 1 November 2019.
