HBO and Bad Robot’s Westworld pilot has been greenlit, and some big names have joined the cast.

THR reports that Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood are starring in the JJ Abrams-produced pilot, written by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

This new version of Michael Crichton’s 1973 classic is described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” The focus seems to be less on wealthy tourists being hunted by malfunctioning machines, and more on these mechanical creations realising that their lives are a lie.

Hopkins will play “Dr. Robert Ford, the brilliant, taciturn and complicated creative director, chief programmer and chairman of the board of Westworld, who has an uncompromising creative vision for the park — and unorthodox methods of achieving it.”

Wood, meanwhile, will star as “Dolores Abernathy, the quintessential farm girl of the frontier West — who is about to discover that her entire idyllic existence is an elaborately constructed lie.”

This new version of Westworld definitely sounds intriguing, and we like the idea of a slightly Island Of Dr Moreau-style spin on Crichton’s concept. With casting this exciting, let’s hope the pilot gets picked up to series.

You can buy Westworld on DVD for £5.11 at Amazon.co.uk.
