War For The Planet Of The Apes teaser has a warning for us

Caesar does not sound optimistic in the first War For The Planet Of The Apes teaser

We’ve been waiting a long time to see anything from Matt Reeves’ War For The Planet Of The Apes, but now it looks like the promotional campaign, much like the war for the planet of the apes, has begun.

Ahead of the actual teaser trailer, there’s this nifty and very moody “digital billboard” for the film, which features a doom-laden voiceover from Andy Serkis’ Caesar.

The third chapter in the rebooted Planet Of The Apes franchise sees Reeves return to the director’s chair after the excellent Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, and he’s writing the script with returning screenwriter Mark Bomback (who co-wrote the last movie with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver).

Serkis leads as the increasingly grizzled Caesar, and the strong cast includes Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Karin Konoval, Amiah Miller, Terry Notary and Sara Canning. The amazing Judy Greer returns as Caesar’s wife Cornelia.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“In War For The Planet Of The Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.”

We’re big fans of this franchise, which seemed like a kind of unlikely prospect at first but quickly revealed itself to be a great blend of old-school sci-fi themes and brilliant new technology, and with a truly iconic character at its centre. We’re very excited to see how this is shaping up.

War For The Planet Of The Apes is released in cinemas on 14 July 2017. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
