Luc Besson’s Valerian is fast becoming one of the films we’re most intrigued by. With an array of talent behind it and a classic story at its centre (Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, the 1967 graphic novel by Pierre Christian and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres, telling of the adventures of the titular time agent and his sidekick, Laureline), it has further bolstered its acting roster with the addition of singer Rihanna.
Thus far, Rihanna’s film fortunes have been mixed, starring in the forgettable Battleship, middling Dreamworks animation Home and as herself in meta stoner comedy This Is The End. However, we’re pretty sure that Valerian will be a much better fit for her. With Besson at the helm, we’re hoping for something gloriously overblown in the tradition of The Fifth Element, and she’d fit right into that.
Rihanna joins a cast that so far includes Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne and Clive Owen, with Besson both directing and writing the screenplay.
Valerian will be released in cinemas on 21 July 2017. For more on the biggest sci-fi movies, pick up the latest issue of SciFiNow.
