Utopia US remake wants Pan star for Jessica Hyde role

Has David Fincher’s Utopia remake cast its lead actress?

Rooney Mara
Rooney Mara is reportedly wanted for the US Utopia remake

After the initial news that HBO were planning a remake of Dennis Kelly’s acclaimed Channel 4 dystopian drama Utopia – produced by Seven and Fight Club director David Fincher and penned by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn – things seemed to have gone quiet on that front.

However, it looks like things might finally be picking up, with the news that Fincher collaborator Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) is locked in negotiations to star as the enigmatic Jessica Hyde, formerly played by Fiona O’Shaughnessy in the British series.

If her involvement is made concrete then this is one hell of a casting coup. Mara’s star is very much on the rise, having also stood out in the likes of Her and Side Effects, and soon to appear in Joe Wright’s Pan. Coupled with the involvement of Fincher, and the prospect of returning to something akin to the eerily familiar yet somehow wrong world of Utopia, we’re just a little bit excited.
