‘Where did I come from? Where am I going?’ muses Tyreese. ‘We are alone in the universe.’

The Walking Dead survivors are always looking towards the future, but the show has also confirmed a few things about the past: we know Rick was a cop (obviously), we know Michonne was a mother and we know now-badass Carol used to be her husband’s punching bag. Even new (and dead) characters like Bob, the alcoholic ex-army medic, have backstories.

But Tyreese (Chad L Coleman) and his sister Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) are still mostly blank slates as far as their pre-apocalypse lives are concerned. Do we even know their last names?

Coleman has had a few seasons to think on it. Talking to SciFiNow before the conclusion of Season 5, he divulges his Tyreese head-canon.

“He was an ex-NFL football player, so that’s what he did,” Coleman tells us. “He’s the type of guy who had a coach or a father who wasn’t larger than life but was a man of great character and integrity and instilled a lot of wonderful qualities in him about what it means to be a human being and what it means to be a man.

“He and his sister are tight and he’s a very protective guy.”

Seeing as the head-canon came from the actor’s mouth, we’re upgrading it to show canon and sticking with it.
