Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to produce, and possibly direct and star in, David S Goyer’s film of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.

The Dark Knight Rises star tweeted his involvement yesterday, and has directing experience thanks to this year’s festival hit Don Jon.

“Just to clarify, folks. I’ve signed on as a producer on Sandman. The rest remains to be seen. Delighted you guys are excited. I am too!”

Neil Gaiman is expected to be an Executive Producer on the film according to THR. Goyer’s script for the film represents the closest we’ve come so far after years of failed adaptations from Roger Avary and Eric Kripke for film and TV.

Can a film adaptation of The Sandman work? The sudden movement suggests that Goyer’s script is successful, and Gaiman’s retweet of Gordon-Levitt’s tweet suggests some form of approval…Let the casting rumours begin.
