In much the same way as Arrow has gradually included the character’s wider canon into its story, The Flash looks to be doing the same thing, with The Divergent Series: Insurgent actor Keiynan Lonsdale being cast as Wally West ahead of Season 2, as reported by Variety.
In the comics, Wally – who will be a series regular – is the nephew of Barry’s girlfriend Iris West (played in the show by Candice Patton), and commences his career as Barry’s sidekick, before progressing on to becoming the replacement Flash. Considering Roy Harper and Thea Queen’s gradual evolution into Oliver Queen’s sidekicks – and Barry’s current lack of one – we’d be extremely surprised if the same fate wasn’t in store for Wally.
This follows in the wake of other Flash casting announcements, such as Teddy Sears (Torchwood, American Horror Story) as Jay Garrick, and Shantel VanSanten (The Messengers, Beauty And The Beast), it would seem that the population of the DC CW-verse (our not-too-catchy name for it) is gradually reaching bursting point. And we couldn’t be happier.
Season 2 of The Flash will air on Sky1 in October. For more about the comics that inspired the TV series, pick up the 100 All-Time Greatest Comics: Revised Edition bookazine now.
