The Discovery trailer Jason Segel and Rooney Mara find the afterlife in Netflix sci-fi

Jason Segel, Rooney Mara and Robert Redford star in this awesome trailer for The Discovery

The first trailer for Netflix’s original sci-fi The Discovery, starring Jason Segel, Rooney Mara, Jesse Plemons, Riley Keough and Robert Redford, has arrived and goddam, it’s a good trailer.

The discovery comes from writer-director Charlie McDowell and his co-writer Justin Lader, the creative team behind brilliant mind-bender The One I Love (starring Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss).

“Dr. Thomas Harbor (Robert Redford) has made a scientific breakthrough that shocked the world. This knowledge has thrown our lives off balance and challenged everything we know about life and death. What is The Discovery?

The Discovery stars Robert Redford, Rooney Mara, Jason Segel, Riley Keough and Jesse Plemons and is a love story set in a world where the afterlife has been scientifically proven, and as a result millions of people start taking their own lives to “get there.””

Along with Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming sci-fi Okja, David Ayer’s monster cop movie Bright and Adam Wingard’s live-action remake of the brilliant Death Note, Netflix’s upcoming original film slate is really bloody exciting. We’re huge fans of The One I Love (that ending was just…wow) and the premise for The Discovery sounds like it could be a recipe for something very special, and we’re loving that cast.

Rooney Mara’s been on an incredible run of form lately (Carol, Lion, Kubo And The Two Strings, and we’ll forgive Pan), as has Jesse Plemons (he was so good in Fargo‘s second season), and we’re definitely up for seeing Jason Segel take on more dramatic roles following his excellent performance as David Foster Wallace in The End Of The Tour. It’s playing at Sundance, so we can expect to hear first reactions soon, but yes, we’re definitely excited about this one.

The Discovery arrives on Netflix on 31 March. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
