The Gunslinger and The Man In Black throw down in the new The Dark Tower trailer

A new trailer for Nikolaj Arcel’s long-awaited The Dark Tower movie has arrived and it’s definitely placing the fight between Idris Elba’s Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey’s Man in Black front and centre. There’s bit of exposition, sure, but mostly it’s about the battle.

It does a pretty good job of distilling the complex mythology and we can’t wait to see these two characters on the big screen. Sure, we still have a lot of questions about how this “continuation” is going to work, but mostly we’re just excited. We’ve been waiting years for this and, frankly, we still can’t believe this film is really happening.

There are other worlds than these. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world’s most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen. The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

The Dark Tower stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, Matthew McConaughey as Walter O’Dim, Jackie Earle Hayley (WatchmenPreacher) as vampire Sayre, Abbey Lee (Mad Max:Fury Road, The Neon Demon) as Tirana, Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, Fran Kranz (Cabin In The Woods, Bloodsucking Bosses) as Pimli and Claudia Kim (Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Marco Polo) as Arra Champignon. Arcel wrote the script with Akiva Goldsman and Anders Thomas Jensen.

The Dark Tower is in cinemas from 4 August. Get all the latest fantasy news with every issue of SciFiNow.
