As far as sub-genres of sci-fi cinema are concerned, romance is one that doesn’t get nearly enough screen time, which is why we’re already gasping to see the upcoming sci-fi love film The Way Between.
We’re suddenly even more pumped now that a director has finally been announced: Kyra Sedgwick will be helming the film from a screenplay by Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph‘s Jennifer Lee. The film is being financed by Tooley Entertainment.
Usually an actress, Sedgwick is best known for leading TV series The Closer and for her roles in the likes of The Edge Of Seventeen, Collection and Big Sky. She also plays Chief Wuntch in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
She made her directorial debut in 2017 with TV movie Story Of A Girl, and is also set to direct an episode of Season 5 of Netflix’s Grace And Frankie.
According to Variety, The Way Between will follow a man who loses his girlfriend in a tragic car accident but finds a way to reconnect with his beloved by bending the laws of reality. His unwillingness to let her go soon blurs his waking life and his intersecting world of dreams.
In a statement, Sedgwick said: “From the moment I read The Way Between, I was captivated by this deeply romantic and universal story of love, sacrifice, empathy and ‘finding your way.'”
“Jennifer Lee’s extraordinary and very personal screenplay, partially rooted in her own experiences, addresses the world we all hope exists,” said Tooley Entertainment’s Tucker Tooley.
“A world where connection and love can transcend conventional boundaries. We are absolutely thrilled to have Kyra on board to manifest the vision of this wonderful story and look forward to announcing cast very soon.”
Producing alongside Tooley and Lee are Rich Freeman, Colleen Camp, Kane Lee, Hector Solis Flores and Roberto Jurado Rebora. Greg Renker, Jason Barhydt and Jose Alberto Lopez are all serving as executive producers.
