Supergirl hasn’t been shy about including outlandish villains in its roster (Red Tornado, Indigo are just a few adversaries that somehow made the transition), but now it looks set to top itself with the news that it has cast Peter Gadiot as Mr Mxyzptlk.
Having starred in Once Upon A Time In Wonderland as Cyrus, Gadiot is no stranger to fantasy on TV – which is just as well, as he has just landed one of the strangest roles he will likely get, even in the contect of the DC Universe.
For those of you who are unfamiliar Mxyzptlk is a reality-bending trickster who frequently turns up to annoy and toy with Superman. He can be banished from this dimension if he’s tricked into saying or spelling his own name backwards, but otherwise he’s pretty formidable, even if he rarely shows the full extent of his abilities.
While we doubt he’ll exhibit his full comic-book potential considering the relatively grounded nature of The CW’s universe, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of portrayal is in store for him here. There have already been live-action variations on him in Smallville and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman (in addition to Superman: The Animated Series), but we suspect that the take on him here will be slightly different.
He joins a cast that already includes Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood, Jeremy Jordan, Chris Wood and Floriana Lima, with Sarah Schechter, Ali Adler, Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Robert Rovner serving as executive producers.
Supergirl: Season 2 will return on 23 January 2017 on the US to The CW with ‘Supergirl Lives’, directed by Kevin Smith, and on Sky1 in the UK at a later date. Read our review of Season 1 here. For all the latest TV news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow.
